About BIAs
Founded in 1980, Downtown Fredericton Inc. received its official Business Improvement Area (BIA) designation under the aegis of the Business Improvement Area Act in 1982.

A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a geographically defined urban area containing primarily non-residential properties generally located in the municipality's Central Business District.

Developed during the 1980's, the BIA concept provides the framework for a collaborative “self help” approach to downtown revitalization by encouraging business and property owners to work in unison to manage their downtown as a valuable resource and viable business destination.

BIA member-driven programming and services generally include promotion, community safety, cleanliness, beautification, physical improvements, strategic planning, advocacy and statistical data collection and dissemination.
