Fredericton, NB – Green on the Green, a day-long event designed to create public awareness of the cause and effect of climate change and what you can do to help, will be held September 29 on the Green in downtown Fredericton.

“Green on the Green is a key component of our Green Matters Campaign to become the first municipality in Canada to achieve its Kyoto targets for Greenhouse Gas emissions,” said Mayor Brad Woodside. “It’s an opportunity to learn about how greenhouse gases are contributing to climate change and what you can do about it. I urge everyone to come out and support this event.”

The day-long celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the banks of the St. John River between the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the walking bridge. There will be tents set up for educational seminars and areas where 'green' businesses and organizations can showcase, educate, and sell environmentally friendly products and services. Exhibitors include TD Waterhouse, Efficiency NB, Science East, JD Irving Ltd., NB Lung Association, Backyard Composters, Conservation Council of New Brusnwick, Fredericton Region Solid Waste Commission, Falls Brook Centre, Earth Institute,Go for Green, Whisco, Bird-Stairs, Home Depot and Classic Stoves.

There will also be a community barbecue and entertainment by Science East and local artists including the Calithumpians, Owen Steel and Darrell Grant on the nearby grounds of Christ Church Cathedral. Queen Street will be closed from University Avenue to Secretary Lane during the event.

To meet Kyoto targets, Fredericton must reduce its corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent and community emissions by six per cent by 2010.

“We're looking to cement our role as a national leader in protecting our environment and combating climate change,” said Mayor Woodside. “We have already made great strides in reducing our corporate greenhouse gas emissions and Green on the Green is an important step toward helping us reach our community targets.”

Major sponsors of Green on the Green include the City of Fredericton, The Daily Gleaner, Enbridge Gas New Brunswick, Capital FM and Waste Management.
