City Launches Green Matters Water Conservation Campaign
Fredericton (June 2, 2008) - The City of Fredericton has launched a new water conservation public education campaign as part of its Green Matters initiative to encourage residents to become more environmentally friendly. The launch of the campaign coincides with Canadian Environment Week.
"Water is a precious commodity and we are very fortunate to enjoy such high-quality water here in Fredericton," said Mayor Brad Woodside in kicking off the campaign. "We need to protect it and use it wisely."
The water conservation campaign has as its theme "Every Drop Counts - Reduce Your Water Consumption." It will provide tips and useful information about how individuals and organizations can properly conserve water, reduce wastage, and protect the city's water supply.
The average Canadian homeowner uses 329 litres of water a day. At home, residents can reduce that number by:
· washing only full loads of dishes or laundry
· Watering your lawn in the early morning hours to minimize evaporation
· Keeping a bottle of water in your fridge rather than letting your tap run to get cold water to drink
Business can encourage water conservation by promoting water-efficient products and services to consumers and practicing conservation themselves.
"We will be developing partnerships with retailers in the Fredericton area to encourage them to feature water-friendly products and services," said Mayor Woodside. "And we will be encouraging the public to become part of the solution. If everyone joins in we can make a big difference."
The water conservation campaign is also aimed at educating residents about the innovative work by the City's water utility to ensure the best quality of water possible.
For years, the City's water utility has been a leader in groundwater protection and in the maintenance of the City's wells.
"Conserving water keeps money in the pockets of residents by giving them some control over how much they pay for City water and sewer services," said Laurie Corbett, the City's Senior Water & Sewer Engineer.
