City Joins National Bell-Ringing Ceremony to Mark Quebec City Founding

Fredericton (July 2, 2008) -The City of Fredericton will participate in a Canada-wide bell-ringing ceremony at noon on Thursday, July 3 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City.

"The harmonious resonance of these bells will celebrate this defining moment in the creation of our country," said Councillor Marilyn Kerton, Fredericton's representative to the Canadian Capital Cities Organization. The simultaneous ringing of the bells will become a "symbol of fraternity," uniting all Canadians."

The ceremony, organized by the National Capital Commission in Ottawa, will feature 400 seconds of "joyous ringing," said Coun. Kerton. "We can't use the bell in our clock tower because it is undergoing a restoration right now but we will be setting up another of our historic fire station bells in Phoenix Square outside the front doors of City Hall for this ceremony," she said. "Everyone is invited to join us."

More than 600 communities, including every capital city, province and territory, from big cities to small parishes, are expected to participate and celebrate our shared history and origins.

The New Brunswick Provincial Capital Commission has issued an invitation to Fredericton area churches to join in the celebration too and ring their church bells at noon.
