News Release
Downtown Restaurant Owner Shopping Locally
February 16, 2009
Chris Black has been trying to use more local food in his restaurant for the past six years, and now he has a new menu to show for it.
Black, the owner of the Blue Door Restaurant on King Street, unveiled a new menu last week composed primarily of local foods, with a mention of where each is from.
"This is something we have been talking about as long as we have been here and the market has now changed enough that we were actually able to start sourcing the ingredients," he said. "Our beef tenderloin comes from a farm in Sussex, our Arctic char is farmed in Nova Scotia and our cod is now from St. George, New Brunswick."
Black said the new menu will only be the start for the Blue Door Restaurant when it comes to using local ingredients. He said he has already arranged for a farmer in Gagetown to plant and grow vegetables specifically for his restaurant when the weather gets better. He is also in talks with a local pork producer to provide the restaurant with a specific type of pork called Berkshire.
"It is just getting going and it is going to be a long term thing for us," Black said. "There are some things we are not going to be able to use local ingredients for, but if there's a possibility of using a local supplier we will."
