Fredericton Named Seventh Best Place to Live in Canada

May 12, 2009

For the third straight year, Fredericton has been named to the top-10 list of Canada's Best Places to Live by MoneySense magazine.

"We are thrilled to add another accolade to our growing list of achievements," said Mayor Brad Woodside. "I can speak on behalf of my Council colleagues when I say we are committed to providing our residents with world-class infrastructure like Fred-eZone (city's free, wi-fi network), and further enhancing the quality of life we so enjoy in Fredericton with facilities like the new sport complexes, swimming pools, fire station & training centre, conference centre and parking structure."

Fredericton finished seventh in the annual Money Sense survey of 154 Canadian cities with populations greater than 10,000. The rankings are based on the following indicators: climate (weather and air quality), housing, prosperity (household and discretionary income, job prospects, new cars, taxes), Lifestyle (population growth, health care, crime, walk/bike to work, amenities) and general "buzz" related to various types of attractions.

According to Money Sense magazine, Fredericton benefits from two characteristics shared by several of the top 10 cities: government and students. This mix gives the city a nice balance of low unemployment, high incomes and inexpensive housing. Home prices are the 12th-most affordable in the nation, yet average household incomes are among the highest in the Maritimes.

Victoria, B.C, was named the best place to Live in Canada followed by Ottawa, Ont.; Kingston, Ont.; Burlington, Ont.; Vancouver, BC; Moncton, Fredericton, Winnipeg, Man.; Peterborough, Ont.; and Brandon, Man.

Money Sense is Canada's best selling investment and lifestyle magazine. It is published six times a year by Rogers Media.
