Launch into Summer with
The 3rd Annual RiverFest
June 8 – 10, 2007
The St. John River Society is pleased to announce the line-up of events for RiverFest 2007. Launching into the summer, RiverFest will include the return of the Salmon & Fiddlehead Community Supper, the Rockin’ the River Concert, the Amazing River Race and the Free Family Paddle, along with the addition of some new, exciting events!
Kicking off the Festival will be the return of last year’s popular Salmon & Fiddlehead Community Supper on Friday night (June 8) under the Chestnut Tent in Officers’ Square. For only $15, diners will be treated to Fredericton’s Finest - Brewbakers will barbeque ginger maple salmon, local fiddleheads and the city’s best potato salad. There will also be entertainment, with music by Ryan LeBlanc, a multi-talented solo instrumentalist whose progressive style interlaces guitar, djembe, harmonica and banjo … sometimes more than one at a time!
Saturday gets rolling with a new event for RiverFest: the River Gear Swap. This is the Maritimes’ only summer season equipment exchange, and is sure to be a hit for outdoor enthusiasts! Modeled after the hugely successful Ski Swap for Crabbe Mountain, the River Gear Swap will get you equipped for the summer. Sellers are encouraged to bring their summer gear for Riverfest to sell on consignment, and buyers are encouraged to come check out the great deals on Saturday from 9am to 2pm at the Carleton Street Armouries, across from the Library.
On Saturday afternoon, the city takes to the River for the 3rd Annual Amazing River Race. Teams of two are encouraged to register early, as there is limited space available. The race welcomes teams of all skill levels, joining one of two races; competitive or recreational. As a new twist to this year’s race, each team will receive pledge sheets, and the team who collects the most from their pledges for the St. John River Society will win the grand prize.
Saturday night under the Chestnut Tent in Officers’ Square features the return of the Rockin’ the River Concert. Headliners for the evening are not strangers to Fredericton, having garnered many fans through their appearances at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. Rick Fines & Suzie Vinnick will be playing from their new, award-winning recording, “Nothing Halfway”. Fans have been waiting for them to record together, and the result is a gem! Opening the evening is Rose Cousins, the East Coast’s newest rising star, followed by Charlie A’Court, fresh from the ECMA Awards, where he won “Pop Recording of the Year” for his new album, “Bring on the Storm”. See what happens when this combo gets together: Charlie and Rose have performed together, Suzie sings backup on Charlie’s album, and Rick is known for being able to sit in with just about anyone. A home run combination!
Sunday is Canada Rivers Day! That afternoon is the Bucket Club’s Free Family Paddle. Everyone is welcome to take a meandering paddle down the St. John River, from the Bucket Club in Silverwood to Carleton Park on Fredericton’s North side. Bring your canoe or kayak, or register early to borrow one for free. There will be a free barbeque and fun events at Carleton Park for participants.
Dinner and concert tickets are on sale now at Mazzuca’s. For more information on tickets, registration for events or the summer gear swap, call the RiverFest office at 450-8709 or visit www.frederictonriverfest.com.
