Investing in Fredericton’s Future: The Performing Arts Centre is Worth the Commitment
A recent news editorial on the cost of Fredericton’s new Performing Arts Centre (PAC) paints an
incomplete picture. While rising costs are frustrating for all, abandoning this project now
would be shortsighted and neglectful of the significant investment and momentum that
has already been made. Downtown Fredericton Inc. remains firmly committed to the PAC
and its long-term benefits for our economy, culture, and community.
The Reality of Rising Construction Costs
Large-scale projects across the Maritimes and beyond are facing cost increases due to
skilled labor shortages, rising material prices, and inflation. This isn’t unique to
Fredericton. These challenges affect all major developments, and we must respond with
resilience and creativity, not retreat.
A Catalyst for Economic Growth
The PAC is more than a venue—it’s an economic driver. When complete, it will draw
visitors, boost foot traffic, and provide a steady stream of customers for downtown vendors
and surrounding businesses. Arts and culture investments can fuel local economies,
attract talent, and enhance tourism, positioning Fredericton for the future as a cultural hub
alongside nearby institutions like the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the New Brunswick
College of Craft and Design.
Community Support and Investment
The Encore! capital campaign has raised more than $10 million for the project and its
future, with nearly 1,000 donors—99% of whom live in the greater Fredericton region. This
overwhelming support underscores the community’s belief in the value of the PAC and
affirms the investments made by all levels of government. The public’s commitment to this
project speaks volumes about its importance to the city’s cultural and economic future.
Financial Responsibility and Long-Term Planning
Fredericton is not overextending itself. The City remains under its 8% debt cap, and over
half of the PAC’s funding still comes from other levels of government. Careful financial
planning ensures this project remains sustainable. Furthermore, the City continues to
explore additional funding sources to ease the financial burden.
Walking away now would waste years of planning and millions already invested. Instead,
we should focus on completing a project that will serve generations to come.
A Vision for a Thriving City
Fredericton is growing, and strategic investments like the PAC ensure we remain an
attractive place to live, work, and visit. Cities known for vibrant cultural infrastructure
thrive—this is about more than just a “cost per seat” calculation. The benefits multiply
through our community, supporting jobs, fostering creativity, and strengthening our identity
as a first-class destination in the global economy.
Moving Forward with Confidence
The PAC was envisioned by those who believe in the power of the arts to inspire and build
community and the local economy. It will be a space for performance, learning,
mentorship, and professional growth. These are the investments that shape a city’s future.
We applaud City Council for seeing this project through. Fredericton deserves a world
class performing arts facility—one that will enrich our economy, culture, and quality of life
for years to come.
