Bard in the Barracks

Bard in the Barracks returns for a two-show season with Twelfth Night being performed downtown in Barracks’ Square and new this year: the Fredericton Botanic Garden will be the backdrop for Romeo & Juliet.

Twelfth Night:

Shipwrecked off the coast of Illyria, twin siblings Viola and Sebastian are separated in an enchanting, but potentially dangerous, new land. Viola disguises herself as a young man named Cesario and comes to work for the lovesick Duke Orsino, whose overtures of love for the Countess Olivia have gone unrequited. The tables turn, however, when Viola falls for the Duke, and Olivia falls for Viola. Meanwhile, Olivia’s house is dead-set on fooling Olivia’s pompous steward, Malvolio, with a nefarious love game of their own.

Set against the backdrop of Barracks Square in Fredericton’s historic Garrison District, in a conventional staging with fixed seating, Twelfth Night (or What You Will), directed by Alex Rioux, is a classic Shakespearian romp with a high-fashion twist! Come see why Twelfth Night is considered by many Shakespeare’s highest achievement in comedy.

Romeo & Juliet:

Shakespeare’s famous tale of the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, whose love is doomed by the enmity between their warring families, is filled with beautiful poetry and music, comic and bittersweet moments, and thrilling swordplay. Rediscover this iconic drama in an exciting immersive experience with Bard in the Barracks’ production, directed by Len Falkenstein and featuring gorgeous costumes in a timeless fairytale setting. You will be at the centre of the action, following the play from scene to scene amidst the natural beauty of the Fredericton Botanic Garden. As the play spirals towards its tragic conclusion as the sun sets, don’t be surprised if you leave at the end of the night thinking this is the most memorable Romeo and Juliet you will ever see.
